Physical operations

We report on several physical characteristics of an asset which we estimate from the available data

Throughput

Energy throughput is calculated as the energy exported by an asset whilst delivering frequency response services, and for balancing mechanism units, energy exported into the wholesale market and balancing mechanism.

The throughput of delivery frequency response services is calculated using 1 Hz grid frequency data - you can read more about how we calculate the power output of an asset delivery frequency response services here.

For balancing mechanism units, we also calculate the energy exported into merchant markets by integrating the area under an asset's physical notifications, and sum this with the volume dispatched into the balancing mechanism.

Export and import position for individual merchant markets. The wholesale position is the area enclosed by an asset's physical notifications, whereas the balancing mechanism position is the sum of balancing mechanism actions

Because balancing mechanism actions alter an assets final position from its physical notifications, the gross exported energy from merchant markets is equal to sum of the net export across wholesale and balancing mechanism actions.

The gross export across merchant markets is equal to the net export across wholesale and balancing mechanism markets

The gross export across merchant markets is equal to the net export across wholesale and balancing mechanism markets

Throughput from wholesale markets are not estimated for non-balancing mechanism units as we do not have visibility over their wholesale positions.

Cycling

Cycling is calculated as the energy throughput, divided by the asset's energy capacity (MWh).
